Tracing his steps
Below, you will find a steadily growing catalogue of monuments, places of memory, and other forms of commemoration dedicated to Thaddeus Kosciuszko and his Uprising of 1794. The objects are grouped according to the country in which they are located; in the case of Poland, however, due to their extraordinary number, they are grouped by voivodeship (i.e. county).
The catalogue includes: sculptures, commemorative plaques, places notably visited by Kosciuszko, music; other forms of material commemoration (such as museums, moulds, paintings, etc.).
The catalogue does not include (as of now): references in literature; streets, schools and institutions named after our hero.
As of February 2024, the most complete catalogue is that of Belarus. Those of other regions are regularly expanded.
Belarus
Monuments, places of memory, and other forms of commemoration in the land of Kosciuszko’s ancestors and the place of his birth.
Due to the ongoing political situation and solidarity with the members of the Belarusian opposition forced to emigrate after the events of 2020, I was not able to conduct research in situ and create a detailed, high quality photo documentation of the discussed monuments. This narrowed the research methodology to a database query (using especially the Belarusian databases, such as Radzima.org or Globustut.by) and analyses of materials shared online by journalists, bloggers, and regional media. The authors and sources for each photo are duly listed below each item – click on the symbol ⓘ to see them.
